The objectives of the Excel Standardisation Programme (ESP) are increased productivity and error reduction

To achieve those objectives, ESP:

  • MAKES MAJOR ASPECTS OF A WORKBOOK UNDERSTANDABLE BY:
    • Inclusion of standard sheets at start of workbook to correspond to standard pages of a book such as title, contents, publications page, preface and references.
    • Creating Menu sheet to help describe structure of the workbook
  • MAKES THE ORGANISATION AND PURPOSE OF SHEETS CLEAR BY:
    • Arrangement of sheets into standard order.
    • Colour-coding and naming of sheets to help describe the flow of data within a workbook.
  • MAKES THE FLOW OF DATA AMONG SHEETS AND WORKBOOKS UNDERSTANDABLE BY:
    • Use of Source and Destination Areas and LinkTags.
    • Automatic creation of a diagram that describes the data flow.
  • MAKES INDIVIDUAL SHEETS EASY TO FOLLOW BY:
    • Use of named styles, indenting, outlining, titles arrangement, cell colour conventions and good typographical style.
  • MINIMISES ERRORS BY:
    • Inclusion of crosschecks and validation.
    • Automatic insertion of a Crosschecks sheet that monitors all crosschecks in workbook.
    • Using reliable techniques such as for file-links across workbooks.
  • HELPS WORKBOOKS BE BUILT FASTER BY:
    • Use of the ESP add-in to insert standard components
  • MAKES APPLICATIONS EASIER TO MAINTAIN BY:
    • Making applications easier to understand.
    • The application of conventions (named ranges, sheet names, tab colours, named styles, indenting, lines, typographical rules, workbook names, data flow).
    • Inclusion of documentation.
    • Recording of changes simultaneously at location and on Changes sheet.
    • Inclusion of a central Params sheet.
    • Structuring so that a workbook can easily be split into separate workbooks.
    • Using the database approach to construction of many common applications.
  • ENABLES FASTER NAVIGATION BY:
    • Navigation to and fro along the forward and backward hyperlink trail.
    • Use of the Menu sheet as a navigational aid.
    • Use of the ESP add-in features.
  • AUTOMATES COMMON TASKS:
    • ESP Automates such tasks as copying data, matching and copying data between tables, and placing data into reports. No ability to write macros is necessary, though you can include any of your own macros in a process.
 
  • SEMINAR FORMAT

    All four seminars have interactive lecture sessions, interspersed with small team (two or three people) hands-on problem-solving exercises. Computers are provided.

     

  • POST-COURSE SUPPORT

    Following each seminar, you have twelve months of unlimited free access to AbleOwl's email hotline for all of your Excel questions.

Course cancellation policy:

A course booking is considered final when an invoice is sent, and can be cancelled up to ten working days before the course. After that, payment is expected in full and no refund will be given.
All cancellations must be notified in writing, i.e. post, fax or email.
Another delegate may be substituted at any time.
