Introduction to spreadsheets

  • Start Excel.

Open and close files

  • Use the Open dialog box to locate a file.

Navigate

  • Use the keyboard and mouse to move around.
  • Freeze Panes to keep the titles in view.
  • Navigate sheets and workbooks.

Create a workbook from scratch

  • Set the standard font.

Enter and edit data in cells

  • Enter column & row titles.
  • Use the F2 key to edit and correct.
  • Undo and Redo.

Copy and fill cells

  • Copy cells with the Fill Handle.
  • Use Copy & Paste to avoid re-typing.

Enter formulae

  • Create low-maintenance totals formulae.
  • Subtract, multiply, divide and anchor.

Format cells to create readable worksheets

  • Know where to put headings.
  • Distinguish inputs from calculations.
  • Apply number formats.
  • Understand what #### means.
  • Format text to improve readability.
  • Indent to clearly show the splits.
  • Use colour to clearly identify headings.
  • Use borders to enhance visual separation.
  • End with a narrow column and row.

Organise sheets

  • Give meaningful names to worksheets.
  • Colour code sheet tabs.
  • Adopt sheet type and name conventions.

Get it on paper

  • Prepare a printout with Page Setup.
  • Repeat the headings on each page.
  • Include page numbers, date and filename.
  • Adjust margins to fit more on the page.
  • Control where page breaks occur.

Course cancellation policy:

A course booking is considered final when an invoice is sent, and can be cancelled up to ten working days before the course. After that, payment is expected in full and no refund will be given.
All cancellations must be notified in writing, i.e. post, fax or email.
Another delegate may be substituted at any time.
